Certificate Validity and Retakes

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 to C2 does not expire. However, universities, employers and immigration authorities may require a certificate issued within the last two years, so check the specific requirement before submitting your certificate.

For B1 to C2 modular exams, you can retake only the module you did not pass. A1 and A2 are non-modular, so you need to retake the complete exam if you do not pass. Eligibility and How to Register for a German Language Test

The Goethe-Institut recommends age 16 for standard adult Goethe-Zertifikat exams from A1 to C2. Younger learners can take age-specific exams, such as Fit in Deutsch from age 10. There is no upper age limit, and no previous German qualification is required.
