TOEFL iBT is accepted by many top universities and institutions in countries around the world for study and other purposes. For Canadian immigration specifically, IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core are the approved English tests instead.
Y-Axis TOEFL coaching helps you prepare for the score required by your chosen Canadian institution, with live online classes, structured lessons, targeted practice, mock tests and trainer feedback across all four skills.

TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are all accepted for Canadian university admission, but they differ in test format, Speaking assessment and use for immigration. The score required also depends on the Canadian institution and program. TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic record Speaking responses through a microphone, while IELTS uses a Speaking interview with an examiner.
| Feature | TOEFL iBT | IELTS Academic | PTE Academic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canadian university admission | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Canadian economic immigration | No | Yes — IELTS General Training required | No — PTE Core required |
| Speaking format | Recorded via microphone | Speaking with an examiner | Recorded via microphone |
| Test format | Computer-based | Computer or paper | Computer-based |
Self-study can work with reliable materials and regular practice, but the new TOEFL format includes spontaneous Speaking tasks and academic discussion questions that can be difficult to practise and assess on your own. Coaching provides a more structured preparation plan, expert guidance and feedback focused on the skills tested in the new format.
Y-Axis TOEFL coaching combines live online classes, targeted practice, mock tests and trainer feedback across Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Get expert support to improve your skills, understand your mistakes and prepare for the score required by your chosen Canadian institution.
A TOEFL iBT score of 4.5 on the new 1–6 scale is required by several Canadian universities, while some also set minimum scores for individual sections. For example, UBC requires 5.0 in Listening, while the University of Toronto requires 4.5 in Writing and 4.0 in Speaking. The required score can differ by university, faculty and program, so check the admission requirement for your chosen program before booking the test.
| University | Overall TOEFL | Section Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto | 4.5 | Writing: 4.5 Speaking: 4.0 |
| UBC | 4.5 | Listening: 5.0 Reading: 4.5 Writing: 4.5 Speaking: 4.0 |
| Dalhousie University | 4.5 | Listening: 4.5 Reading: 4.0 Speaking: 4.0 Writing: 4.0 |
| University of Waterloo | 4.5 | Writing: 5.0 Speaking: 5.0 |
TOEFL iBT is not currently accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class or Provincial Nominee Programs. For these Canadian immigration pathways, the approved English tests are IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core. TOEFL is also not accepted as an English language test for Canadian citizenship. IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, CELPIP-General LS, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for citizenship language requirements.
TOEFL is widely accepted for Canadian university and college admission. You can use TOEFL for your study application and take IELTS General Training or PTE Core later when you apply for permanent residence through a Canadian economic immigration program.
TOEFL is widely accepted for university admission in Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Australia also accepts TOEFL for skilled migration and several work and business visa pathways, while New Zealand accepts it for the Skilled Migrant Category and Accredited Employer Work Visa.
| Country | Accepted For Study | Accepted For Work and Immigration |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | University and college admission | Not accepted for Express Entry, PNP or citizenship |
| United Kingdom | University admission | Not accepted as a SELT for UK visa routes requiring one |
| Australia | University admission and immigration | Accepted for Skilled Migration, Work, Business, and Post-study visas |
| New Zealand | University admission and immigration | Accepted for Skilled Migrant Category and Accredited Employer Work Visa |
| Europe | University admission for English-taught programs | Not typically used for European immigration pathways |
The redesigned TOEFL iBT takes about 90 minutes and covers Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking in one sitting. Reading and Listening use adaptive modules, so the difficulty of the second module is based on your performance in the first.
The test includes practical academic tasks such as Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Academic Discussion, Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview. Speaking responses are given without preparation time, so you need to respond immediately. Automated scoring is used across different task types to assess your performance.
| Section | Duration | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 30 minutes | Two adaptive modules with Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage |
| Listening | 29 minutes | Two adaptive modules with conversations, announcements and academic talks |
| Writing | 23 minutes | Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Academic Discussion |
| Speaking | 8 minutes | Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview, with no preparation time |

TOEFL iBT is scored on a 1–6 scale in half-point increments and is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). A score of 4–4.5 corresponds to B2, while 5–5.5 corresponds to C1, and 6 represents C2. Each section receives its own score, and the overall score is the average of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, rounded to the nearest half band. For example, an average of 5.125 becomes 5.0, while 5.25 becomes 5.5.
TOEFL score reports currently include the new 1–6 score alongside a comparable overall score on the previous 0–120 scale. This helps institutions that still publish admission requirements using the previous scoring system.
| Band Score | CEFR Level | Comparable 0–120 Score |
|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | C2 | 114+ |
| 5.5 | C1 | 107+ |
| 5.0 | C1 | 95+ |
| 4.5 | B2 | 86+ |
| 4.0 | B2 | 72+ |
| 3.5 | B1 | 58+ |
| 3.0 | B1 | 44+ |
TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date, and official results are currently available about 3 days after your test. The redesigned TOEFL iBT launched on January 21, 2026, introducing the 1–6 scoring scale, a shorter test of about 90 minutes, and modernised task types and topics.
Institutions are updating their admission requirements at different times. Through January 2028, TOEFL score reports include the new 1–6 scores alongside a comparable overall 0–120 score, so you can apply to institutions that still publish their requirements using the previous scale.
