IELTS is an important English language test for study permits, work visas, and Canada Express Entry applications, and it is accepted across a wide range of international study, work, and immigration pathways. IELTS scores can be converted into Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, with higher CLB scores helping increase the CRS points awarded for language proficiency.
Y-Axis IELTS coaching prepares you for the Academic or General Training test through structured lessons, live classes, practice tests, and expert guidance across listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The coaching also supports UK, Australia, and European countries where IELTS is accepted as proof of English proficiency.

Self-study works for some test-takers, but it can be difficult to identify gaps in structure, timing, and performance without expert feedback. Writing and Speaking are assessed against specific criteria such as coherence, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation, which can be difficult to evaluate accurately on your own.
A structured course also keeps preparation on track with a clear study plan and target date. Y-Axis IELTS coaching provides you with trainer feedback through practice tests, helping identify weak areas early and correct recurring mistakes before the actual exam.
IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic assess the same four skills, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, but they serve different purposes. IELTS General Training is used for Canada Express Entry and many Provincial Nominee Programs, while IELTS Academic is generally required for university and college admission. Choosing the right test before booking helps ensure your IELTS result matches the requirements of your study, work or immigration pathway.
| Feature | IELTS General Training | IELTS Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Immigration, work and pre-university study | University and college admission |
| Canada Express Entry | Accepted | Not accepted |
| Canada PNPs | Accepted by most PNP streams | Not accepted for language requirements |
| Reading | Everyday, workplace and general-interest texts | Academic texts |
| Writing | General and practical writing tasks | Academic writing tasks |
| Listening | Same format | Same format |
| Speaking | Same format | Same format |
IELTS is accepted for study, work and immigration in Canada, the UK, Australia and several European countries. The IELTS band score required depends on the country, visa, institution or immigration pathway. The test type also varies by purpose, with IELTS Academic commonly used for study and IELTS General Training used for many work and immigration pathways.
| Country | IELTS Test | IELTS Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | General Training | CLB 7 for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. CLB 9 reaches the maximum skill-transferability points for the relevant CRS factors. |
| UK | IELTS for UKVI | B2 level for Skilled Worker routes. This generally corresponds to 5.5 in each skill when IELTS SELT is used. |
| Australia | Academic or General Training | 6.0 in each skill for Competent English, 7.0 in each for Proficient English, and 8.0 in each for Superior English. |
| Germany | Academic or General Training | B2-level English for the Opportunity Card points route. |
| New Zealand | Academic or General Training | 6.5 overall for the principal applicant under the Skilled Migrant Category. |
IELTS General Training scores are converted into Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels separately for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The required CLB level depends on the immigration program. For Express Entry, CLB 7 is the minimum language level for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, while higher CLB levels can help increase CRS points.
| CLB Level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 4 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| CLB 5 | 5.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 |
| CLB 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| CLB 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 |
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
IELTS has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening, Reading and Writing are completed in one test session, while the Speaking test may be scheduled separately. IELTS Academic and General Training have the same Listening and Speaking sections, while the Reading and Writing sections differ.
| Section | Duration | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 30 minutes | 40 questions based on four recorded conversations and monologues |
| Reading | 60 minutes | 40 questions based on three reading sections |
| Writing | 60 minutes | Two writing tasks based on the Academic or General Training format |
| Speaking | 11–14 minutes | A face-to-face interview with three parts |
IELTS scores each of the four skills from 1 to 9, and the overall band score is calculated from the four individual scores. The overall score is reported in whole or half bands. An average ending in .25 is rounded up to the next half band, while an average ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, while 6.75 becomes 7.0.
Listening and Reading each have 40 questions, with the number of correct answers converted into a band score. Academic and General Training Reading use the same band scale, but General Training generally requires more correct answers to reach the same band.
| Band Score | Listening | Academic Reading | General Training Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band 8 | 35 | 35 | N/A |
| Band 7 | 30 | 30 | 35 |
| Band 6 | 23 | 23 | 30 |
| Band 5 | 16 | 15 | 23 |
| Band 4 | N/A | N/A | 15 |
Note: The exact number of correct answers required can vary slightly between IELTS test versions.
IELTS results are generally considered valid for two years from the test date, although some organisations may accept older results based on their own requirements. IELTS is moving towards computer-delivered testing, with the transition timeline varying by market. In selected countries, the Writing on Paper option allows test takers to complete the Writing section by hand while taking the rest of the test on computer.
One Skill Retake allows eligible test takers to retake one IELTS skill within 60 days of their original computer-delivered test instead of taking all four sections again. Availability depends on the test centre, and the organisation receiving the result must accept One Skill Retake.
