PTE Academic is a computer-based English test accepted by universities and colleges worldwide and for work and migration in countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Results are typically available within 48 hours. For Canada, PTE Academic is accepted for university and college admission, while PTE Core is used for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. Self-Study vs PTE Coaching: Which Is Better for PTE Preparation?

Self-study can work with a clear study plan and reliable practice materials. PTE coaching adds structured lessons and trainer feedback, which can be especially useful for Speaking and Writing, where the AI scoring system assesses areas such as content, pronunciation, oral fluency, grammar and vocabulary.

Some universities, visa routes and immigration programs require minimum scores in individual skills, so a high overall score may not be enough. Y-Axis PTE coaching provides live instruction, practice tests and trainer feedback to help improve weaker skills, strengthen test-taking strategies and prepare for the required score.

PTE Academic vs PTE Core vs PTE Academic UKVI: Which Test Do You Need?

PTE Academic is mainly used for university and college admission, PTE Core is used for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship, and PTE Academic UKVI is used for UK routes that require a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Choosing the right test helps you meet the English language requirement for your application.

Feature PTE Academic PTE Core PTE Academic UKVI
Main purpose University and college admission Canadian permanent residence and citizenship UK routes requiring a SELT
English tested Academic English General, everyday English Same test as PTE Academic
Canadian PR and citizenship Not accepted Accepted Not accepted
UK routes requiring a SELT Not accepted Not accepted Accepted

PTE Score Requirements for Canadian Universities and Colleges

Most Canadian universities and colleges accept PTE Academic scores between 50 and 65 for undergraduate admission, while diploma programmes may accept scores from around 45. Competitive postgraduate and professional programmes, including business and engineering, can require scores of 65–80 or higher.

Requirements can differ by programme and faculty, even within the same university. Major Canadian institutions that accept PTE Academic include the University of Toronto, McGill University, the University of British Columbia, McMaster University and the University of Waterloo.

Program Level Typical PTE Academic Score
Diploma / certificate 45–50
Undergraduate 50–65
Postgraduate 60–70
Competitive / professional programmes 65–80+

Top Countries Accepting PTE for Study, Work and Immigration

PTE is accepted for study, work and immigration purposes in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and other destinations, but the test you need depends on your pathway. PTE Academic is used for university and college admission in Canada, while PTE Core is used for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. PTE Academic is also accepted for study and selected migration pathways in Australia and New Zealand, while specific UK visa routes require PTE Academic UKVI.

Country PTE Test Score Requirement
Canada PTE Academic for study & PTE Core for immigration Study: 45–80, depending on the programme.

PR/Citizenship: PTE Core
Australia PTE Academic Skilled migration: 47–54 per skill for Competent English, 58–76 per skill for Proficient English, and 69–88 per skill for Superior English
New Zealand PTE Academic Skilled residence: 58 overall for the main applicant; 36 for a partner or dependent aged 16 or over
UK PTE Academic UKVI Skilled Worker: 59 in each skill where a PTE test is required

How PTE Is Scored: Score Scale and CEFR Levels

PTE Academic scores Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing on a scale of 10–90, with 90 as the highest possible score. Each skill receives an individual score and contributes to the overall score.

Some universities, visa routes and immigration programmes also set minimum scores for individual skills, so the overall score alone may not be enough. PTE Academic scores are also aligned with the CEFR, providing a reference point for your English proficiency level.

PTE Score CEFR Level
85–90 C2
76–84 C1
59–75 B2
43–58 B1
30–42 A2
10–29 A1

PTE Test Format: What to Expect on Test Day

PTE Academic is a computer-based test completed in one sitting and takes about two hours. It has three sections: Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening. The test includes speaking, writing, reading and listening tasks designed to assess your English skills in different ways.

Section Duration What to Expect
Speaking and Writing 76–84 minutes Speaking tasks, personal introduction and two writing tasks, including Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation
Reading 29–30 minutes Fill in the blanks, multiple-choice and paragraph-reordering tasks
Listening 30–43 minutes Summarize Spoken Text, multiple-choice and dictation-style tasks

Note: There are no scheduled breaks during the test.

PTE Validity and Recent Test Changes

PTE Academic results are usually available within 48 hours to 5 business days and are generally valid for two years from the test date. Some universities, organisations and immigration authorities may have different validity requirements. For Australian skilled migration, PTE results can be used for up to three years from the test date.

The PTE Academic test format has also been updated with newer tasks, including Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. There is no mandatory waiting period between PTE attempts, so you can book another test when a suitable date is available.

Tips to Improve Your PTE Score

Improving your PTE score starts with knowing the score you need and practising each skill consistently.

  • Know your target score: Check the score required by your university, visa or immigration pathway.
  • Speak and write naturally: Focus on clear, relevant responses with steady pacing, rather than relying on memorised templates, which the AI scoring system can flag and penalise.
  • Practise all four skills: Give regular attention to Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, as each skill receives an individual score.
  • Use timed practice: Complete practice questions under test conditions to improve accuracy and time management.
  • Review your mistakes: Identify recurring problems with grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or comprehension and work on them.
  • Take mock tests: Track your scores and focus your preparation on the skills that need more practice.
