Employer Sponsorship and UK Skilled Worker Visa for Canadians

To work in the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa, Canadians must secure a job offer from a UK employer registered as a licensed sponsor. Understanding how sponsorship works helps target the right companies and improve visa success.

  • Register of Licensed Sponsors: The employer must hold a valid UK Home Office sponsor licence. Only registered companies can issue a Certificate of Sponsorship
  • Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): The employer issues a CoS confirming the job role, salary and employment details. Without this a visa application cannot proceed
  • Salary threshold: The role must meet the minimum salary of £41,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher
  • Occupation eligibility: The role must be classified at RQF Level 6 or above and appear on the UK eligible occupation list
  • Immigration Skills Charge: The employer pays £1,320 per year for large organisations or £480 per year for small sponsors

Targeting companies already on the Register of Licensed Sponsors significantly improves your chances of securing sponsorship.
